LES MAMELLES des TERESIAS 1983 OPERA THEATER OF ST. LOUIS

Opera by FRANCOIS POULENC

John Bridges, CHICAGO TRIBUNE

…All is absurdist surreal farce––the gendarme arrives astride a huge soft-sculpture revolver on rockers; an off kilter vaudeville with soft-shoe routine introduces a line of marcell-waved chorines dolled up to represent various Parisian landmarks. The scenic spectacle is of the simplest sort. The thousands of babies born to the Husband are huge white balloons in glistening grocery-cart prams. When a thunderstorm threatens it brings a wonderful downpour of glittering foil snippets. The finale ended with hundreds of white balloons falling from the ceiling to audience cheers. The entire production, from begining to end was a hoot.
