GRAFFITI DI VENEZIA   1978    VENICE, ITALY

Chase spent two weeks in Venice in 1978.  He was struck by the presence of so many torn posters and notices. He decided to connect many of them by stripes of paint (a motif that later appears in his work of the 1980's)   He would start out early in the morning and do the painting, then return later in the day to take the photographs.  "What's remarkable, no one seemed to notice anything was different!", he said when reporting his time there.
