GENERATION A Family Album 1983

HUGO VON HOFMANNSTHAL and his Children

In 1982, Michael Zimmer, a lifelong friend of Chase, commissioned a family history of his grandfather, Hugo von Hofmannstahl , the German poet and librettist of Richard Strauss' most famous operas - Electra, Salome and Der Rosenkavalier.  The book was created in the memory of Zimmer's son Jacob, who had drowned tragically two years before. Chase was given a large box of vintage photographs to work with, and below are a few of the pages he created, covering the fates of the three Hofmannsthal children, Raimund, Franz and Christiane (Michael Zimmer's mother)   The book is now in the collection of the Hoffmanstahl Library and Archives in Zurich, Switzerland.
