WORK ON PAPER    1980 - 1990

FRAGMENT SERIES    1989

As a child, Chase had been fascinated by mounted specimens.  He worked by himself in a small studio built for him in middle school, where he collected all sorts of beetles, spiders and exotic looking insects.  He loved the order of lining specimen up and putting them behind glass.  He had been exploring a way he could capture that earlier love in his watercolors.  He also was haunted by the watermarks he had discovered on Ingres drawings in London, and began this series of "specimens" which were inspired by them.  The works became both actual watercolor and elements of collages watercolor.
