When visiting Paris in 1990 Chase happened on an exhibition of Ingres drawing portraits. What fascinated him were the watermarks left on the paper, from years of wear. The tone of those watermarks and their austerity became one of the major motifs in his painting afterwards. This series was inspired by the color and feeling of the watermarks.
