One of Chase's lifelong interests has been the study of writing and calligraphy. On graduating from college he spent the summer in Barrytown, New York, copying the handwriting of Elizabeth I and listening to Gregorian Chants. (Somewhat bizarre, by the standards of the 50's.) This obsession lasted two more decades which led to his designing his own alphabet and recently his own computer fonts. In the nineties he created this whimsical book devoted to handwriting, which doubles as a meditation on the necessary elements included in serious works of art.
