SPANISH SERIES 1989

Chase's two years in Spain during the late 50's had always left him with great sympathy for it's tragic history. The often morose fates of its countrymen - the tragedy of the Spanish Armada, the gory end to many of the conquistadors, the descents into madness of many of its kings , and the terrible violence of the Spanish Civil War.  Running parallel to this was his discovery of early Spanish music - the soulful work of Thomas de la Maria, and Cabezon. He used only the most prosaic of materials - canvas, paper, masking tape and silk to suggest religious objects in the dark mood of 17th century Spain.
